DEI stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion. But what do each of these terms actually mean?

Diversity

Diversity is an acknowledgment of differences that enrich the workplace. It means that all people have varied identities due to different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Examples of diversity may include (but are not limited to): race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, language, (dis)ability, age, religious commitment, or political perspective.

Equity

Equitymeans that individuals are given the resources that they need to be their most successful selves. It acknowledges that we all have different circumstances and starting points, and aims to ensure that we reach the same goals with the appropriate level of resources for each of us.

Inclusion

Inclusion is valuing and leveraging difference (or diversity). In an organization, inclusion means that all people are accepted, respected, meaningfully engaged, and able to fully participate in the activities, decision-making processes, and development opportunities of the organization, regardless of their identity.

An acronym evolves

Ironically, there are many variations on the standard DEI acronym and it's becoming as diverse as the subject matter itself. In recent years, we’ve seen an evolution happening and it’s become increasingly common for companies to talk about related concepts, such as belonging, justice, and social justice. Some of these other variations emphasize these additional topics.

I firmly believe that embedding a DEI strategy is not only the right thing to do but also a strategic imperative for long-term success. By embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion, we will cultivate a culture that celebrates the uniqueness of every individual and harnesses the power of diverse perspectives, driving innovation, customer satisfaction, and sustainable growth.

I am committed to partnering with all leaders to navigate this transformative journey and create an inclusive organization that reflects our values and ambitions. Together, we can build a stronger, more successful, and more equitable future.🌈
